With today’s modern technology, Brake Failure has become very unlikely. Nowadays, drivers are fortunate enough to have brake systems that allow their vehicles to brake even when one side of the circuit experiences failure.

Another technology now available is ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) or anti-lock brakes. These devices prevent wheels from locking up during maneuvers requiring emergency braking. As a result, modern vehicles can now avoid many accidents that previously would have been inevitable. They come in especially handy when you have to stop in a hurry or in a slippery road, which are two situations that are not that uncommon. In the rare event that you do experience problems with your brakes, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Analyze the traffic situation around and make decisions accordingly.
  • Find a safe place to move your car to, and immediately shift to low gears (both automatic and manual vehicles).
  • Pump your brakes firmly three or four times. This should get brakes to work.
  • If you have anti-lock brakes, simply press the brake down hard on the pedal. This takes a little longer to brake, though.
  • If this doesn’t work, use your parking brake, but release it if your car starts skidding.
  • Always remember to steer your vehicle throughout this process.

Drum braking systems, which are found mainly on older vehicles, could fade when temperatures rise. Disc brakes, on the other hand, are now available on newer vehicles and are substantially more effective. If you are involved in a car accident due to brake failure, you should contact an attorney to learn about your rights and get the appropriate guidance.
