Fatal accident at Mammoth Cave NPMammoth Cave National Park A fatal one-car accident occurred in Mammoth Cave National Park Saturday evening at approximately 7:50 p.m. Ranger Matt Roland, on patrol in the area, arrived on the scene west of the Sloan’s Crossing intersection within minutes of the accident.
The Chevy Tahoe with four occupants was traveling east on Brownsville Road when it left the pavement, hit a culvert, and ran into trees along the woodline. Razell Hummell, Jr., 41, of Byrdstown, Tenn., died on impact. Mr. Hummell was the passenger in the front seat and was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver, Jeffrey David Cooper of Jamestown, Tenn., was transported to the Bowling Green Medical Center.
Tyler Clark, sitting on the passenger side in the back seat, was trapped in the vehicle; JAWS of Life were used to extricate Clark, who was then flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt Hospital.
Bryan Cooper, the third passenger, received minor injuries.
Numerous agencies responded including the Chalybeate VFD, the Kyrock JAWS of Life, Edmonson County Emergency Services, Air Evac, the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police, and the Edmonson County Coroner’s Office.
The accident is under investigation.
