Empty Dinner Display in Memory of Lost Lives

Some families across North Dakota will be missing something special as they sit down at their tables for a holiday dinner. They will be missing a family member because of an alcohol-related crash. In 2005, 56 people were killed in alcohol-related crash. An “Empty Dinner Party” display is set up in remembrance of the 56 people who were killed.

In 2006, 41 people to date have been killed by alcohol-related crashes.

In memory of the 56 who have lost their lives in 2005 because of an alcohol-related tragedy, the NDDOT, the North Dakota Safe Communities Coalition (NDSCC), and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) are kicking off an Empty Dinner Party campaign throughout North Dakota’s communities.

In Bismarck, a display is set up at I. Keating Furniture store in remembrance of those who have lost their lives due to alcohol-related incidents.

According to North Dakota Highway Patrol Safety and Education Officer Lt. Kelly Rodgers, the holiday season is one of the deadliest times of the year due to alcohol-related crashes. “One alcohol related death is one too many,” says Rodgers.

Every year, 40 to 50 percent of traffic fatalities are alcohol-related,” said Rodgers. The reality is that these fatalities are preventable. According to NDHP approximately 6,000 people were arrested for driving under the influence last year.
