New Seat Belt Laws to be Enforced in Indiana

Enter Source, Jun 26, 2007

Starting July 1, 2007, all passengers and drivers of automobiles must wear seat belts or face a $25 fine.  Local law officials remind the public that this is not about the fine... it's about saving lives.

Previously, all vehicles registered and plated as trucks and backseat passengers over the age of 16 were exempt from wearing seat belts, but the new law, which was passed on May 10th, will require everyone to be properly restrained.

Warrick County's Sherrif department reported that opponents to the seat belt law think that them choosing to wear or not to wear their seat belt only affects them.  In 2006, the economic cost for one fatality cost taxpayers $1,019,724.

It was also reported that at least 54 lives that were lost in 2006 could have been saved if pickup trucks and other vehicles registered as trucks were not exempt from the seat belt law.
