In Chelmsford, State Police Investigate Serious Crash
Today, at approximately 8:50 p.m. troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Andover responded to a one-car crash on Route 3 southbound south of Drum Hill Road (exit 32) in Chelmsford that resulted in one serious injury.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Eric Bernstein indicates a juvenile male was operating a 2002 Ford Explorer in the middle travel lane of Route 3 South, at a high rate of speed, when he lost control of the vehicle. The Ford traveled off the roadway, through the right shoulder guardrail, rolled over several times and came to rest on its roof. The juvenile operator was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Due to the operator’s age his name will not be release.
Although speed appears to have been a factor, this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Chelmsford Police Department, the Chelmsford Fire Department and Mass Highway assisted troopers at the scene.
Due to the investigation and vehicle recovery all lanes of Route 3 south were closed for approximately ½ hours after which the left lane was opened. The right two lanes remain closed at this time.
