Pedestrian on Freeway in Snow is Hit by Car and Loses Legs
A 60-year-old Federal Way man is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center after losing his legs on Novermber 27 in a collision. The driver, who was standing outside his car in the right lane, was previously involved in a collision on the overpass.
As the driver was looking inside his car he was struck by another motorist driving a Chevrolet Astro van.
The driver, a 20-year-old Des Moines man lost control on the overpass. The Astro van slid into the pedestrian pinning him between both vehicles. The pedestrian suffered internal injuries in addition to losing his legs as a result of the collision. The driver of the Astro van is a convicted felon whose driver’s license is suspended. He also has no car insurance.
The State Patrol urges everyone to use extreme caution whenever exiting their car on the freeway. Collision scenes can be even more dangerous and often create additional hazards for motorists. Divers are encouraged to remain seat belted in their vehicles until help arrives.
