Compensation for Unpaid Medical Bills After a Car Accident

If you are injured in a car accident, you are likely to have incurred various medical bills from the treatment of your injuries.  These unpaid medical bills can be a large source of stress for many persons, who often are also missing work due to their injuries.  Fortunately, there are a number of ways that you may be able to seek compensation for unpaid medical bills that result from your injuries in a car accident.

Automobile Insurance

When medical bills arise from injuries resulting from a car accident, the first logical source of compensation is the automobile insurance policies from the drivers involved in the accident.  If the driver who was at fault in the accident was adequately insured, then you may be able to work with that insurance company’s adjustor to obtain some immediate payment of your out-of-pocket medical expenses.  If, however, immediate payment from the other driver’s policy is not possible, or if no such insurance coverage is available, your own automobile insurance policy is likely to provide coverage for medical bills resulting from your injuries.  Of course, the insurance policy that issued your automobile insurance policy may later seek reimbursement of any medical bills it paid from the party at fault, or, more likely, from the insurance company of the party at fault.

Health Insurance

If you are covered by a health insurance policy, you also may have coverage for your medical expenses.  Your health insurance policy, however, usually will not provide you with coverage for medical bills related to injuries stemming from a car accident until any coverage available under your automobile insurance policy is exhausted.  Therefore, you may have to submit claims under both policies in order to obtain coverage.  Like the insurance company that issues your automobile insurance policy, your health insurance policy will also seek reimbursement of its expenses in covering your medical bills that result from the car accident.  If you ultimately receive an award of damages or reach a monetary settlement with the party at fault for the car accident, then your health insurance company will claim a portion of that compensation as reimbursement for its expenses.
