When you are a policyholder of GMAC auto insurance and are involved in a car accident, you will need to confirm that your coverage will pay for the unpaid medical bills you have from the accident.  Most GMAC auto insurance policyholders have Personal Auto Policies, which combine several kinds of insurance coverage.  There are also two types of personal injury protection coverages that are associated with GMAC auto insurance policies.

Components that Make Up a Typical GMAC Personal Auto Policy

There are 4 main components that make up a typical GMAC Personal Auto Policy:

  • Bodily Injury Liability – This coverage protects you from the risk of financial loss in the event that you or someone who has permission to drive your vehicle causes to someone else.  These losses can include claims for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses.
  • Property Damage Liability – This coverage pays for any damage caused to someone else’s property.  This would usually go for repairs of the other person’s vehicle, but can also go for repairs of a fence, mailbox or other structure that is hit by your car.  Loss of use of property is also covered, so if the other person needs substitute transportation while his/her car is being repaired, this component will cover the cost of that substitute transportation.
  • Uninsured Motorist – This coverage will provide payment in the event that you are in an accident with another person who is liable for your injuries, but who is a hit-and-run driver, does not have any bodily injury liability coverage, and/or his insurance company is unwilling or unable to pay for the damages.
  • Underinsured Motorist – This can be added to the uninsured motorist component to provide payment to you in the event that you are in an accident with a driver who is liable for your injuries, but whose auto insurance policy limits are not high enough to cover the cost of the injuries you sustained.  Usually, that driver’s auto policy limits must be less than the limits stated in your policy in order for this component to be in effect.

GMAC Personal Injury Protection Coverages

There are 2 main types of GMAC personal injury protection coverages:

  • Medical payments – This type of accident insurance applies only to the insured driver and the passengers of the insured vehicle.  This type of coverage applies no matter who is at fault.  It will provide for medical and funeral expenses that were caused by bodily injury.  This coverage will also cover medical expenses for the insured person or any family member who was injured in an auto accident as a pedestrian.
  • Personal Injury Protection – This is a broader form of medical payments coverage that will not only pay for medical and funeral expenses, but will also provide benefits for work loss or loss of earnings, expenses related to the replacement of essential services that are normally performed by the injured person, and survivor loss benefits to compensate for the death of a covered auto accident victim.  This policy applies to the insured driver and passengers injured in the insured vehicle regardless of whoever is at fault for the accident.  In no-fault states, this type of coverage is mandatory.
