When you are involved in a car crash accident, there are basic rules of responsibility that need to be followed to ensure that police reports are filled out accurately and car insurance claims are as easy as possible.

Reporting to the Police

When liability appers to be unclear or the facts of an auto accident may be in dispute it is important to call the local police. Often the police can help determine negligence for the accident. It is important to write down everything you can remember on your portion of the police report. Give the police details. When an accident is fresh in your mind, you are able to recall the most. If anyone at the scene , including you, appears to be injured you should report this information to the police or 911 as well. They will be able to call for an ambulance so treatment can be administered or the person transported if necessary.

Exchanging Information

While you are still at the scene you should write down all information on the other parties involved and share your information with them as well. This includes name, address, phone number, year, make and model of the vehicles involved. Also remember to get the insurance information, including policy number for each party involved.

Reporting to Insurance Companies

Report the car accident to the insurance companies as soon as possible, as previously stated, the information is most clear in your mind immediately after the accient. If liability is not clear, you should report the claim to all insurance companies involved. They will be able to determine the liabilty and take care of damaged vehicle of their own insured while this determination is being made. It is most important that you report the accident to your insurance company if you are at fault for the auto accident. Do this as soon as possible so the other party can have their vehicle repaired.

After you report the claim to your insurance company you will need to give them a full statement. They are unable to accept liability for the accident if they do not have a statement of the facts of loss from you. This means that neither your vehicle or the other party's vehicle will be repaired.  If more than one insurance company is involved, you will need to give a statement to each of them.
