Going through the claims process with your auto insurance company can be virtually painless. Knowing what to expect is the first obstacle. Below are some steps to making your car insurance claim as simple as possible.
The first thing to remember is to gather as much information as possible at the scene of the accident. The more information you are able to give your insurance adjuster, the faster they will be able to process the claim.
Stay Calm
When reporting an insurance claim you will often have to repeat the same information to multiple people. You will have to give all the information when you file the claim with the call center, then you will need to repeat the information, sometimes in more detail during a recorded statement to your adjuster. You will then either be called by a car appraiser who looks at your vehicle, or you will need to speak with the adjuster again after you take your vehicle to the shop of your choice. The repairs will then commence and a rental car provided, if applicable.
Know Your Coverage
If you feel the adjuster may have misinterpreted your auto coverage, check your policy. Most of us never think to read the policy that is sent to us. If you have questions or feel as though you have a coverage they have not offered take a look at your policy and declarations page. The declaration page will have all of the coverages you have purchased. The policy will have definitions and information regarding each coverage.
Ask Questions
If you have questions throughout the process, ask your adjuster or even your agent. They are unable to help you if they do not know that you haven't understood the process. If you need to know the next steps to take, ask them to explain them in detail. Take notes while you are on the phone so you remember what to do next.
Return Phone Calls
If your adjuster has called, return the phone call. They either need additional information from you to move forward, or have steps that need to be followed to bring the claim to resolution. You will often need to voice approval for certain things, or need to speak with the adjuster regarding a rental car. These are simple phone calls which will alleviate stress and anger later.
Getting Legal Help
If you have questions that are not being answered or feel you are being treated unfairly you may contact an attorney for help with your claim.
