When investigating a claim, an auto insurance adjuster is going to hope that the claimant is ignorant of the claims process. This is because when the claimant is ignorant it will be easier for the adjuster to make a low offer and have it accepted. However, there are several tactics you can employ that will show the adjuster you mean business.
Learn the Process
Nothing scares an auto insurance adjuster more than facing a knowledgeable, well-prepared claimant. When meeting with or speaking on the phone with an adjuster, show him that you have informed yourself about the normal and the insurance company’s claim process. This will demonstrate that you are not going to be a pushover and take whatever the adjuster says as the truth.
Prepare Your Own Review
While it may seem daunting, one of the best ways to show an adjuster that you mean business is to offer him places to go to perform his evaluation. Contact auto body shops in your area and ask if they have a contract with the insurance company you are dealing with; after finding one or two that are associated with the company, schedule appointments to obtain repair estimates. At the same time, obtain at least two estimates from repair shops that are not affiliated with the company.
Gather Evidence of Personal Injury
If you requested compensation for personal injury in your claim, gather the evidence that supports your claim and the amount you requested. Under the law, you are entitled to copies of all of your medical records. Collect the physician notes, test reports, receipts and any other paperwork associated with your personal injury. You do not need to provide this information to the adjuster; it is his job to gather what he needs. However, collecting it beforehand enables you to understand and prepare for his analysis of your injury.
Hire an Attorney
Hiring legal representation is a sign that you are not going to back down from your claim. While you may hesitate to take this bold of a step at the beginning of your claim, do not hesitate to do so if your claim is taking extremely long to process or if the adjuster requests a second interview with you. Hiring an attorney at this point indicates that you are not going to sit around, waiting idly until he finishes his analysis.
Getting Legal Help
If you believe that the adjuster assigned to your case is not treating it fairly or taking you seriously, consult an attorney about your options. An attorney will review the adjuster’s investigation and discuss your options with you.
