Have you ever been involved in a car accident? You are not alone. Millions of Americans go through this unfortunate situation every year. In fact, about 6 million accidents are reported annually. With so many cars driving in U.S. roads, it’s very likely that accidents will occur, in spite of driver caution.

A car collision can be a very traumatic experience, but it is important to remain calm and think before acting irrationally. It may be hard to know exactly what to do in a car accident, so here is a list of what to do in a car accident:

  • You should call 911 immediately, whether or not the accident is serious.
  • If you haven’t sustained serious injuries, you should move the vehicles to a safer place to avoid being struck by oncoming traffic. If a vehicle is not drivable, the passengers should remain inside with their seatbelts on until help arrives. If possible, set cones, flares, or whatever warning sign is available to alert others.
  • Following the accident, you should exchange your name, address, phone number(s), license plate number, driver license number, and insurance information with the other people involved. Also, try to write down as detailed of a description as you can about the other individuals and cars implicated in the incident, as well as the location.
  • You should be polite and calm, but not admit to fault, even if you believe you are responsible. Anything you say can be used against you.
  • If you have a camera available, take pictures of the accident, focusing on specific damages and injuries.
  • If any witnesses were present, take their contact information. This may come in handy in case of a dispute with the other driver(s).
  • The police officer should file a detailed report of the accident, and you should ask for a copy. If, for any reason, you are not able to locate a police officer, you can file a state vehicle accident report (available at police stations).
  • Know exactly what your insurance policy covers. This allows for a speedier claim process, and prevents you from having unwanted expenses following the accident.
  • Contact an attorney if you have sustained serious injuries or if you are unsure of your rights concerning car collisions.

An insurance claim process can be a very exhausting ordeal, especially when injuries are involved. Even if the accident appears to be your fault, you still have rights. An experienced attorney can guide you through this process, and even get you the damages you deserve.
